Specifying marble for a five-star hotel is one of the most demanding tasks an architect or interior designer can face. The stone must perform flawlessly under heavy use, look stunning for decades, and meet stringent fire and safety regulations. Here is how to do it right.
Step 1: Define Performance Requirements
Before selecting a stone, establish the performance envelope for each application:
- Flexural strength: Critical for cantilevered elements, suspended stairs, and thin-panel cladding. UNI EN 12372.
- Slip resistance: Essential for wet areas (bathrooms, pool decks, hotel entrances). UNI EN 14231 or DIN 51130.
- Water absorption: Determines frost resistance for exterior use. UNI EN 13755.
- Fire reaction: Required for public spaces. European class A1 (non-combustible) for stone.
- Abrasion resistance: Critical for lobby and corridor flooring. UNI EN 14157.
Step 2: Choose the Right Stone Type
For five-star hotels, the marble selection is often a balance between aesthetic ambition and practical durability. Key considerations:
- White marbles (Bianco Carrara, Calacatta): Stunning but show wear. Best in low-traffic areas or where regular maintenance is guaranteed.
- Travertine: Warm, textured, forgiving — excellent for classical or Mediterranean hotel styles. Requires filling of natural voids.
- Dark marbles (Nero Marquina, Verde Guatemala): Dramatic but high visual contrast — every scratch and dust shows. Best in controlled environments.
- Onyx: Translucent and spectacular for feature walls and backlit panels. Not suitable for flooring or wet areas.
Step 3: Request the Right Tests
Always require test reports from an accredited laboratory (not just the supplier's own data). Key tests to request:
- Flexural strength (UNI EN 12372)
- Compressive strength (UNI EN 1926)
- Water absorption (UNI EN 13755)
- Abrasion resistance (UNI EN 14157)
- Frost resistance (UNI EN 12372, for exterior)
- Breaking load at dowel holes (UNI EN 13364)
Step 4: Sampling & Approval Protocol
Establish a clear sampling and approval protocol with the supplier:
- Initial sample (A4 size) — for colour and texture approval
- Workshop sample (1m²) — for surface finish and seam treatment
- Mock-up panel (full slab) — for vein matching consistency and overall effect
- Production batch sample — from actual stock proposed for the project
Step 5: Supplier Due Diligence
Not all marble suppliers are equal. For five-star projects, verify:
- CE marking compliance with CPR 305/2011
- ISO 9001 quality management certification
- References from comparable hotel projects
- Block photography and video before purchase (for vein matching)
- Export documentation for international projects (certificate of origin, material data sheets)
Budget Guidance
A realistic budget for marble in a five-star hotel:
- Economy: €80–150/m² — standard Bianco Carrara, basic formats
- Mid-range: €150–400/m² — Calacatta, premium Bianco Carrara, bookmatched panels
- Ultra-luxury: €400–1,500+/m² — rare Calacatta Oro/Viola, onyx, designer stones
